Hövding Helmet: Wearable Airbag For Cyclists

In some cases, fashion and cycling do not mix well. For example, helmets can leave your hair looking a mess. That and they’re not the most trendiest head accessory out there. This is where designers Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin came together to design the Hövding “Chieftain” helmet.

The Chieftain Hövding Helmet is essentially a collar with a folded airbag. In the case of an accident, the Chieftain helmet uses a gas generator to fill the airbag. This happens when your head enters an abnormal movement. The airbag can also be removed and stored inside the collar.

For the past six years, the designer studied the different types of bicycle accidents by connecting sensors to dummies in order to ensure the airbag does not accidentally fill up out of the blue.

Six LED lights are hidden within the collar to monitor the sensor. When the battery is low, you can connect the helmet to a USB port for charging. Once connected the software within the helmet will automatically update.

What are your thoughts—is the Chieftain Hövding Helmet a fashionable alternative to your standard bicycle helmet?
